OUR PROGRAM IN KENYA

We are currently focusing on the village of Entasekera in Kenya. We primarily support the local elementary school “Osinantei” with six projects. All serve to stabilize the school and enable parents to earn the school fees they need for their children.

Osinantei Primary School is a school in Entasekera with around 300 students. It fulfills an important task in the region in the school education of the next generation of young Kenyans.

However, many parents cannot pay the school fees.

With know-how transfer and minimal financial bridging, Hold my Hand enables parents to independently secure the financing of lessons that are adequate from a pedagogical point of view.

We do this by providing start-up financing for two agricultural projects (bean cultivation and honey production). The idea behind it is that the parents work together with solidarity farmers to earn school fees for their children themselves.

Stabilizing projects such as lunch and investments in the infrastructure promote the attractiveness of the school.

START-UP FINANCING OF AGRICULTURAL PROJECTS ON THE SCHOOL AREA

AGRICULTURE

Osinantei Primary School is surrounded by usable farmland that is currently not cultivated. It belongs to the school area and, following a decision by the Maasai, can be used by the parents in a solidarity-based agricultural project.

As the parents cultivate the fields and sell the harvest and count the proceeds as part of the school fees, the costs paid directly by the parents decrease and become affordable.

Hold my Hand supports the project with start-up financing. The project costs for the start of solidarity farming around the school are financed until the project is self-sustaining and the parents produce enough harvest.

HONEY PRODUCTION

The school grounds can also be used for the joint production of honey. The required bee houses are installed on the school grounds and managed together by the parents, and the honey is sold by the parents. The proceeds go directly back to the school and are used to pay school fees.
Hold my Hand pays for the bee houses and honey harvesting equipment and trains the parents in professional beekeeping.

STABILIZING AND PROMOTING THE ATTRACTIVENESS OF THE SCHOOL

LUNCH

Many children at the Osinantei School do not show up for class in the afternoon because their journey to school is so long that it is not worth the arduous journey to school again after the lunch break. This affects their school performance.

Since July 2023, Hold my Hand has been paying the children porridge at lunchtime.

This enables the children to concentrate at school all day and do their homework during their lunch break.

WELL CONSTRUCTION

There is no well in the entire Entasekera area. Hold my Hand is therefore installing a solar-powered fountain on the school grounds. This is particularly important for the planned agricultural projects. The well can be used to produce twice the amount of harvest and to alleviate periods of drought. It also serves to improve hygiene and health, as many people in the area only have dirty water available (WASH project).

TOILETS AND TEACHER'S HOUSE

The current toilets are no longer usable and urgently need to be replaced. The children are currently relieving themselves in the surrounding school area. Hold my Hand is financing the construction of a new toilet facility (also as part of the WASH project).

A teacher's house is to be built in the foreseeable future. This allows teachers to be there for students even during off-peak hours. The population collected money for the teacher's house. Hold my Hand provides partial financing to the teacher's house.

FINANCING SCHOOL FEES

Until the projects have been implemented sustainably and the parents can pay the children's school fees, it must be ensured that the students already enrolled attend school regularly and that the current teachers remain at the school.

That's why Hold my Hand finances part of the urgently needed school fees, especially for very needy families.

THE PROJECTS 2023 - 2027 IN A GRAPHIC OVERVIEW

The graphic shows the interaction of the individual projects at the Osinantei primary school:

The agricultural projects allow parents to sustainably finance their children's school fees and lunch themselves. However, it takes a few years until the fields produce enough harvest.

Until then, Hold my Hand will pay lunch for all students as well as school fees for particularly poor families. This forms the foundation because then all children can attend school continuously.
